About us

The Broadford and District Historical Society proudly serves the communities of Broadford, Strath Creek, Reedy Creek, Tyaak, Sunday Creek, Glenaroua, Flowerdale, Glenburnie, Dry Creek, Sugarloaf Creek, Clonbinane, and Tallarook.

Established in 1968, the Society was founded with the purpose of fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of the unique history of our district. Our focus is exclusively on preserving and promoting the heritage of this local region.

Our work includes:

  • Preservation and Protection – Safeguarding local historic buildings and landmarks that reflect the character and history of our communities.

  • Collection and Conservation – Gathering, cataloguing, and preserving artefacts, documents, and records of historical significance.

  • Museum and Exhibitions – Operating a small but vibrant museum that showcases items of local interest and tells the stories of the people, places, and events that have shaped our district.

  • Genealogical and Historical Research – Assisting individuals and families with research into local ancestry and family history, supported by our growing archive and reference collection.

  • Community Engagement and Education – Hosting events, workshops, and talks to share historical knowledge and inspire ongoing interest in our shared past.

The Society works in collaboration with Heritage Victoria and maintains affiliation with the Royal Historical Society of Victoria, ensuring our practices align with broader heritage and conservation standards. Regular fundraising initiatives support the continuation and expansion of our programs and services.

The Broadford and District Historical Society Inc. is a registered incorporated association (Incorporation Number A0020958G) and operates under ABN 14 491 017 881.

Our museum, research centre, and administrative office are located within the Alison Tomkins Reserve, at 110 High Street, Broadford, where visitors are warmly welcomed to explore the district’s rich and diverse history.
